Civics 101: The Red Power Movement

The Library’s Civics 101 series seeks to explore lesser known political histories and perspectives and shine a light on local issues impacting our community. This year, we're highlighting stories of civics that go beyond the ballot: all the activism, organizing, protest, research, and community building that go on behind the scenes to make change happen. Join us for The Red Power Movement: History and Legacy, a presentation by Jimmy Lee Beason II, a citizen of the Osage Nation and professor in the Indigenous and American Indian Studies department at Haskell Indian Nations University. The Red Power movement was a social justice movement led primarily by young Native activists during the civil rights era who demanded self-determination in order to liberate themselves from the paternalistic and genocidal policies of the United States. This discussion will examine this history and explore how the concepts of Red Power still resonate with Native communities today as we continue to navigate
