RetroActive Field Trip: Steamboat Arabia Museum

The Steamboat Arabia Museum has been a Kansas City one-of-a-kind "must-see" for over 30 years.  The museum will be closing its doors in November, so we thought it deserved one last loving look.  The mighty Arabia sank in the Missouri River near Kansas City on September 5, 1856.  In 1988, a group of 5 men and their families took a chance that they might find that steamboat somewhere in a cornfield far from the river, which had changed its course over the years.  The museum tells the story of how they found it and showcases the 200 tons of cargo that was headed for general stores and homes in 16 Kansas territory frontier towns. The cargo was perfectly preserved beneath 45 feet of mud and silt. Treasures on display include fine china, shoes, weapons, and the world's oldest bottle of pickles! We have a 90 minute guided tour; the price is $14.50 per person, payable at the door.  Come say goodbye!
