Starlight and Story: How We've Imagined the Universe

What do ancient star myths, medieval sky maps, Renaissance paintings, and modern images from space telescopes have in common? Each reflects humanity's enduring desire to understand our place in the cosmos. Carrie Fitzgerald, planetarium director at Montgomery College's Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus, presents how people across cultures and throughout history have imagined the universe in an illustrated presentation. We'll trace the evolution of our cosmic worldview, from stories told beneath dark skies to the discoveries of modern astronomy, and examine how art, science, and wonder continue to shape one another. Along the way, we'll encounter celestial myths, remarkable works of art, scientific breakthroughs, and some of the most beautiful images ever captured of the universe. Join us for an evening of exploration, inspiration, and a renewed sense of connection to the stars above.
